GT40 P1032

FORD GT40 Mk2 Chassis P 1032

1032 was completed by Holmann & Moody to replace GT 107 in the Mk2 program. Painted in white with a black hood it was sent to Sebring in February 1966 for the 12 hours race where it finished 2nd. Then it went  to France for the 24 hours of Le Mans in June this time painted in gold. It retired after 4 hours. Only 2 races for this Mk2, after Le Mans it was resprayed in black to look like the winner of that race and was used as a show car. In 1970 it was donated to the "Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum"where it stayed for a while then went to the "Early Wheels" exhibition in Terre Haute Indiana, still as the Le mans winner look alike livery but with white stripes instead of silver. 1032 has been recently (2013) restored to its 1966 Le mans livery.

The 1966 season Part 4

THE 24 HOURS OF LE MANS

The 24 hours finally arrived. After the success at Daytona and Sebring Ford had to win. They brought the big armada, no less than 8 Mk2 with the 7 liter engine and 6 Mk1 with the 5 liter entered by private teams. Against them we found the same amount of cars for Ferrari but with only 2 factory entries, only one for Chaparral and 6 Porsche Carrera 6.
During practice Ford lost already one car in an accident between the Scuderia Bear's Mk1and the AMR's #7 Mk2. The Mk1 was destroyed beyond repair but the Mk2 was repairable. The officials disqualified the driver and the car for unsportmanlike conduct. Alan Mann and Leo Beebe (President of Ford France) went to meet the officials and after menacing to withdraw all the Ford entries an arrangement was made and only the driver (Thomson) was disqualified. Brian Muir was found at the last minute as a replacement. The Mk2 was quickly repaired using the black nose of the Alan Mann's spare car -1012- still in its Spa livery.
The Le Mans Line up:

                             #63 - Mk1 - Chassis 1029   - Entered by Scuderia Bear - DNS Accident

Of the 14 entries only 3 finished but at the 1st-2nd-3rd places : goal achieved.
There was a little mishap at the end. In order to stage a finish with a tie the leading car (#1) was told to slow down to let the #2 rejoin, but the officials told the team that, by rule, a tie was not possible. In the case when 2 cars pass the finish line together the one which starts further down will be the winner having covered a greater distance. That staging robbed the #1 car drivers the victory.
In addition to the win at Le Mans, Ford got the Manufacturer Championship.
The rest of the season was raced by privateers. Ford didn't want to let people think that this victory was just luck and announced their return in 1967. The "J" program continue and the Mk2s went back to testing.

The 1966 season Part 2

THE 12 HOURS OF SEBRING 1966

The 24 hours of Daytona were a big success even without the works Ferrari. The next big rendez vous was at Sebring. This time 2 Ferraris were present. Ford brought 4 Mk2 ; 2 for SAI ( GT110 & 1031) and 2 for H&M (1032 & 1016). Each were painted in different colors unlike at Daytona. Chassis 110 was the abandoned Mc Laren X1 project for the Can Am which has been rebuild to Mk2 specification but still in roadster configuration. All Mk2 saw the addition of 2 brake air scoops on the rear hood.
2 lightweight GT40 Mk1 were entered by Alan Mann AMGT1 and 2. These 2 lightweight cars had to run in the prototype category (with the Mk2) They were greatly modified : aluminium body, Mk2 brakes etc...
In addition 7 GT40 Mk1 were entered by privateers.
It was another 1-2-3 victory. The 4th place has been lost stupidly. 1031 was cruising to a certain victory when the engine blew up 3 mn before the end in view of the finish line. The driver (Dan Gurney) had only to wait there to save a 2nd place but he tried to push the car and was disqualified. The roaster GT110 won followed by 1032 and the Mk1 1026.
