GT 104

FORD GT - Chassis GT 104

The "work" career of GT 104 is very similar of GT 103. The car was sent to Le Mans in 1964 without much testing. It quit after it caught fire after 82 laps. After repair it was sent to the Nassau speed week where it retired on suspension problems. As for GT 103 it was sent to Carol Shelby at SAI to be prepared for Daytona the opening race of the 1965 season. Resprayed in dark blue with white stripes and fitted with Hallibrand alloys wheels it finished 3rd. It ran at Sebring, Monza and the Nurburgring on the Shelby colors. At the end of the season it was repainted in its original color (white and blue) and was used as a show car. GT 104 was sold in 1970 to a private collector. It changed hands several times. The car still exist and has been restored to its Shelby Livery.

GT 103

FORD GT Chassis GT 103

GT 103 started its career directly at Le Mans for the 24 hours race where it lasted only 5 hours before retiring. It was then sent to the 12 hours at Reims in Champagne where again it did not finished. After another unsuccesfull attempt at the Nassau speed week GT 103 was handed other to Carol Shelby to be prepared for the 1965 season.
Repainted in Shelby blue with white stripes and fitted with Hallibrand alloy wheels GT 103 along with GT 105 was shipped to the 1st race of the season at Daytona.
For the 1st time a GT 40 not only finished a race but won it. It finished 2nd at Sebring, 3rd at Monza and a DNF at the Nurburgring. That was the end of its career as a work car. At the end of 1965 it was sold to a privateer -William Wonder- who race it to the 70s and beyond when the historic race scene took off. He owned the car for another 20 years and probably still owns it.

GT 102

Ford GT Chassis GT 102

GT 102 was sent to the preliminary test at Le Mans with only 25 miles covered. As for the sister car GT 101, it crashed during testing but was able to be repaired and saw more testing at the M.I.R.A. and Goodwood.
It was the first GT40 to see a race. It was entered for the 1000 Km of the Nurburgring - Qualified 2nd but retired after only 15 laps (suspension troubles).  After more testing at the M.I.R.A. it was sent to Le Mans. The best of the 3 Fords,  it retired nonetheless after 13 hours (Gearbox problems). Repaired for the 12 hours of Reims it didn't finished there either. it was then sent to Monza where John Whitmore crashed it during practice and, too damaged, the car was scrapped.

GT 101

FORD GT Chassis GT 101

The first 12 prototypes built by Ford were named Ford GT. The number 40 came later with the production series.
The 1st one - GT 101 - was presented at the press on April 1st 1964 at Heathrow near London. Soon after it was sent to New York for a car show. A week later it was used for some testing at the M.I.R.A (Motor Industry Research Association) then sent to the preliminary test at Le Mans.
Joe Schessler was complaining about instability at high speed and soon after he lost control of the car in the Hunaudières. The driver was OK but the car was too damaged to be fixed for Le Mans and some parts went to finish GT 103. It is rumored that the chassis was rebuilt and renumbered as a later car.
GT 101 had only run for 465 miles when it crashed.
