GT40 P1067

Ford GT40 Mk1 Chassis P 1067

The particularity of 1067 is that it is one of three Mk1 road cars to have been sold from the factory with a Mk2 rear hood and is the only one which still has it. The car was sold in December 1966 in a light metallic blue. It changed hands a few times and was raced in club events for a while in the early '70s wearing a yellow and black livery. Its owner could not afford the maintenance cost and stored it in a garage for decades, buried under a pile of junk. It was finally sold and is undergoing a full restoration to its original glory.

GT40 P1065

FORD GT40 Mk1 Chassis P 1065

Sold in December 1966 this road car has been owned by several collectors before being restored in 1982. Painted in bright red it wears the famous license plate "GT40" bought at a price which could have paid for a GT40 a decade earlier.

GT40 P1051

FORD GT40 Mk1 Chassis P 1051

This road car has been used first as a "Press car" by Ford UK . It was seen in the magazine Motoring news of Dec. 1966. originally in Gold it stayed that way until the early 80s. Resprayed for a while in Gulf color it returned soon to an almost identical gold. 1051 was raced in historical events now equipped with Hallibrand wheels instead of its original Borrani wire wheels. In 1993, after a crash, 1051 was rebuilt by Racing Icons to full Gulf specifications, using some parts from 1008 which went to be restored to its 1965 specs. The only difference being painted in the original Gulf dark blue instead of the iconic light one. The car can be seen regularly in vintage car races.

GT40 P1049

FORD GT40 Mk1 Chassis P 1049

1049 was sold mid '66 to Grady Davis, the vice president of the Gulf Oil Company, as a road car but equipped with a racing engine and transmission. JWA and Gulf signed a deal to race the next seasons with the Mirage M1 (a lightweight version of the GT40) but the Mirages were not ready at the beginning of the year so they decided to upgrade 1049 to racing specifications for the first two races. The car was painted the original Gulf color: dark blue with an orange stripe and raced at Daytona (6th) and Sebring (DNF). When the 3 Mirages were ready Grady Davis returned the car to its road use then sold it to Francis Grand who raced it at Sebring in 1969 this time in a dark metallic green livery. It was resprayed in yellow with a black spare wheel cover and a different rear hood and it has its Borrani wire wheel back on. 1049 was also raced at Daytona and Sebring in 1970 this time with Hallibrand wheels.
Then it was sold to a collector who reverted it to a road car again. It changed hands several times and is now restored to its 1967 Daytona Gulf colors but with a larger hood with two rear lights instead of four.

GT40 P1049 to P1072

FORD GT40 Mk1 Chassis P 1049 to P 1072

This sequence of chassis number is a series of GT40 "Road cars"
Some of them with time have been transformed in race cars and were raced in  historic events in the 1980s and beyond.
I found 4 with some interesting aspects and they will be presented in the following posts: Chassis 1049, 1051, 1065 and 1067

GT40 P1048

FORD GT40 Mk1 Chassis P 1048

Sold to Mario Casoni, 1048 has been raced by its owner through the 1966 and '67 season mainly in the Italian mountain championship entered by Casoni and later by the Brescia Corse team he owned. It was sold to Willie Konig in 1968 who raced it once at Norisring. Then the Frenchman J.P. Rouget bought it and raced it a couple of times the following years without any success: an accident in the practice of the 1000 Km of Paris, another spin at the Casablanca GP and it caught fire at the 1971  Le Mans test days.
Sold as a burnt out chassis it was rebuilt by Franco Sbarro in Switzerland over the next few years.

GT40 P1047

FORD GT40 Mk2 Chassis P 1047

1047 as its sister car 1046 was sent new to Le Mans in June 1966. In red with white stripes it retired at the 17th hour. It raced at Daytona early 1967 with the same livery but wearing the name Mercury instead of Ford on the side sills for promotion reasons. Modified as a Mk2B, resprayed in light blue it raced at Le Mans in June 1967 where it retired. It has been established that 1047 at Le Mans was in fact 1031 and vice versa (see the post about 1031 and also the one about the 24 hours of Le Mans 1966 on this blog) 1031 (the real 1047) retired also at Le Mans in an accident.
After the race the real 1047 was sent back to the US to be repaired and was sold later to a Japanese collector. It stayed hidden in Japan for decades until it was sent back to England to be restored. It still wear its 1067 Le Mans livery.
