GT40 P1046

FORD GT40 Mk2 Chassis P 1046

1046, the most famous of the Mk2 gave Ford its first victory at Le Mans in 1966 driven by Bruce Mc Laren and Chris Amon. It was in 2nd place in the same lap before the end when Mc Laren was asked to rejoined the leading car - 1015 - which was waiting for them, to stage a 1-2-3 finish along with 1016 which was a few laps behind. But just before passing the finish line Mc Laren stepped lightly on the gas and "stole" the victory to 1016 driven by D. Hulmes and Ken Miles.
Its 2nd and last race was at Daytona in 1967 where it retired. In between these 2 races 1046 was extensively used for testing by Holmann & Moody.  After Daytona it was used again for testing in preparation of the Mk2B program for the 1967 Le Mans race. it was then stored for a while at H & M losing in the process some of its parts, then was sold, changed hands a few times, spent 3 years in a wooden crate in Belgium and was forgotten. In 1983 its new owner didn't know that he bought the winner of Le Mans and it took months of research to finally prove its origin. 1046 is now restored to its black and silver stripes Le Mans livery.
