GT40 P1009 / 1009A

Ford GT40 Mk1 Chassis P 1009 and P1009A

Built in 1965 1009 was sent to its new owner in South Africa where it was raced in the Springbok series. It raced at Spa and the Nurburgring in '66 before being shipped to Australia for a one off race. Then back to England, South Africa, a few races in the US and all over Europe in 1967/68.
Sold to Malcom Guthrie at the end of '68 it was resprayed in grey with violine stripes. It crashed at Kyalami and was sent to FAV for repair but instead of rebuildint the wrecked chassis M. Guthrie decided to have 1009 build with a new chassis provided by JWA. It was sent to Alann Mann who reconstructed it to the most lightweight specifications. After racing at Le Mans in 1969 the car finished its racing career in South Africa. But the wrecked 1009 chassis was sold and rebuilt by its new owner and by 1971 there was 2 GT40 with the 1009 chassis number !!! For clarity I name the car rebuild by Alan Mann 1009A- The original being 1009. Both cars still exist  1009A is in England and 1009 is in California.
